The station is off the air!

If the station has suddenly gone off the air ...

Or if the station has been off the air for an extended period with no response from the Technical Director ...

Do NOT file a Helpdesk Ticket.

Complete the checklist below, and then

Pick up the phone and CALL the Technical Director.

If the station has suddenly gone off the air, chances are there is a power problem at the transmitter site.

If the transmitter site does not have power ... we cannot go back on the air until they do get power.

Please proceed through this checklist before you call the Technical Director  (ESPECIALLY if the current time is between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am).

  1. Double-check that you are listening to the air signal.
a.)  Press the External 1 monitor on the console. Listen in the speakers, or listen in the headphones.
b.)  If there is no air signal in the air studio, double check reception of the station in the Production Studio and the Listening Station.
c.)  If there is no air signal, proceed to Step 2.

  2. Check the equipment in the transmitter rack. If the meters on the equipment labelled "Belar FM Monitor" are not moving (and you ARE playing music), then the transmitter might be off the air. Proceed to step 3.

  3. Check the transmitter controls where you take your hourly readings. Can you take readings now? If not, are the lights flashing like a theater marquee? If so, the studio-to-transmitter link might be down, or the transmitter might be off. Proceed to step 4.

  4. Has a thunderstorm passed through the area? (HINT: Go upstairs and LOOK!) The transmitter site, in East Cleveland, might have lost power. Sometimes, their building has small hiccups in the power system, so there doesn't even have to be a thunderstorm in the area.

  5. Call the Lake Park Tower front desk (Phone: 216-932-1127 or 216-932-1128), identify yourself as being from the radio station with the antenna on the building, and ask the following questions:
    1) Does the building have any power?
    2) VERY IMPORTANT:  What is the status of the elevators?
    3) Has there been any short break in power in the last hour or so?  Has there has been a lightning strike near the building.

If the transmitter site does not have power ... we cannot go back on the air until they do get power.  When the power goes back on, our transmitter will usually go back on automatically.

On the other hand, even if their building does have power and the elevators are working, the Technical Director might have to visit the transmitter site to manually reset the transmitter.

If we are still off the air, and you have completed the above checklist, THEN you can call the Technical Director.

To repeat: Do NOT file a Helpdesk Ticket.

Complete the checklist above, and then

Pick up the phone and CALL the Technical Director.
